Keefe Law Firm in conjunction with the Law Offices of Peter C. Lucas, is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against Chrysler for defective sunroof drainage systems in the Jeep Patriot, Liberty, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Commander, and Chrysler 300c.
Sunroofs in these vehicles leak, resulting from design errors, faulty materials, substandard installation practices, and manufacturing defects. This leaking causes damages to the owners through repair costs; loss of use and enjoyment of the vehicle; time spent arranging and obtaining repairs; and reduced resale and trade-in values.
The leaks can cause the following physical damages:
- Degradation of structural components, wiring and passenger cabin
- Shorts in the electrical circuitry
- Engine stalls
- Instrument malfunctions in seat and window controls
- Standing water on floors and mats leading to degradation of floor carpeting and sub-structure
- Water stains
- Hazardous mold and mildew, with associated smells
- Dampened and damaged interior seats and headrests
- Weakened components and structures
- Rust
Chrysler and its agents have refused to address and correct the faulty drainage tubes, claiming that the leaks result from other non-Chrysler factors and not covered under warranty. However, between 1999 and 2010 Chrysler issued no less than 9 Technical Service Bulletins addressing the issue of faulty drainage tubes and water leaks.
Vehicles equipped with these defective sunroofs experience leaking when subjected to rain, snow, sleet, car wash water, and various other forms of moisture. Owners and lessees of these vehicles often cannot use their vehicles in such. If they do, the vehicles require time to dry out. Defective vehicles cannot be readily cleaned by hand or automated wash because pressurized water leaks into the cabin, flooding the interior.
